Schools Befriending

What is School Befriending?

Our 'Befriending in Schools' aims to provide support and a listening ear to young people who are experiencing difficulties in the school environment   This project was piloted in the Carluke Learning Community.

Who will benefit?

Young people who fall into one or more of the following categories:

     *  Unsettled at school

     *  Lacking in confidence

     *  Difficulty in forming relationships either with peers or staff

     *  Withdrawn

     *  Experiencing difficulty at home

     *  Not attending school

     *  Would benefit from one-to-one time

How can I help?

A volunteer befriender will spend 1 - 2 hours on a weekly basis, during school time, with a young person, building up a trusting supportive relationship.  The befriender will use this time to undertake some form of activity and allow the young person some time to talk.  It is hoped that this relationship will lead to the following outcomes:

     *  Increased engagement with school

     *  Increased school attendance

     *  Young people will have more confidence in the school community and beyond

     *  Young people will be helped to maximise their school experience

     *  Increased social skills will better equip young people in their journey through life

Reasearch shows that, by taking on a quasi-mentoring role, someone who is not 'official' can make a real difference in a young person's life .

What happens next?

If you are interested and have the time to spare, talk further to one of the team, tel 01698 894013, or e-mail office@coveybefriending.org.uk

Volunteers will receive full training and support and all expenses will be paid.
