CAR GAMES AND OTHER IDEAS
The old perennial: "I Spy" and the variant, "Colour I Spy": “I see something you can't see and it's ”.
Road signs: Test your knowledge and see how many different road signs you see on your travels. Do you know what they all mean?
Car Cricket: You choose a colour & make of car and so does your young person. Score one 'run' (point) for each one you see of that colour or make on an agreed part of the journey or for a set time. Four 'runs' for three cars in a row of one colour or make. Six 'runs' for a car of the make and colour selected.
Number plates can be a source of mental gymnastics: the combinations of letters can be used to make words or for amusing acronyms e.g. VSP – very silly policeman.
The Minister's Cat: "The Ministers cat is a... (fill in the blank with an adjective beginning with A, then B, etc) ...cat". Each person takes a turn at the same letter before moving on. Cries of "I was going to say that!" are common.
"I went on my holidays and took..." : Start the sentence and see how many bizarre things you can put in your case. e.g: Befriender: "I went to London and packed my case and took my snake", YP: "I went to London and packed my case and took my snake, and shoes". Bf: "I went to London and packed my case and took my snake, shoes and coat".
This can be done by keeping to one initial letter or not. Depends on your memory and young person’s ability.
Spot the COVEY advert on two Stokes buses! This one might have a limited lifespan as the adverts are due to come off the buses in a wee while.
Some other things to do as part of an outing:
Some young people and befrienders like looking round garage forecourts. See if you can spot the most expensive car. (No, COVEY expenses don't stretch to that).
See how many sweets you can get for £1.
Make your own picnic: Instead of going out to eat, set a budget and see what you can get to eat and enjoy. A chance to introduce them to new tastes.
Ever thought of taking your young person to get their nails done. A good activity if you're in to that sort of thing. Look under beauty salons in the Yellow Pages.
Keeping a diary or scrapbook of your outings can be fun and gives some focus to your outings. Collecting programmes, tickets and brochures gives you both something to look back on.
