There are seven (yes, 7) museums in Biggar: the Moat Park Heritage Centre, Greenhill Covenanters' House, Gladstone Court, Biggar Gasworks, John Buchan's home at Broughton, Hugh MacDiarmid's cottage at Brownbank and Albion Motors.

General opening times are from Easter to mid October: Mon-Sat 11.00am-4.30pm; Sun 2.00-4.30pm. These times might not apply to all sites so check it out in advance.

Dating back to 1532, oldest part is the tower house built by Sir James Hamilton of Finnart. Note the unique caponier! Disabled access is possible to the courtyards, ground level of main tower, display point, tea-room and shop but not the east wing vaults, the top of the main tower, basement, caponier or ditch.

Gain an insight into the process of lead mining and the lives of miners and their families. Guided tour of Lochgell lead mine, miners' library and cottages. You can also have a go at gold panning!

Wanlockhead

Scotland's highest village at 1531ft. Mining village where lead, gold and other mineral deposits first exploited by the Romans.
